Speedway, IN Overview

The name says it all: Speedway Town, Indiana, home of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and location of the world's most prestigious and exciting racing events. While most people relate the Indy 500, the Brickyard 400, and the United States Grand Prix with Indianapolis, these events actually occur in the small Town of Speedway. The community literally grew up around the track, since the Indianapolis Motor Speedway preceded the community by 17 years when a cornfield area west of Indianapolis was purchased in 1909. The first 500-mile race was run in 1911. One of the developers desired to have an attractive residential area to complement the industrial sites around the track. Completely surrounded by Indianapolis, the town is proud of its unique identity and autonomy. Area youth receive a quality education in the Speedway School District. Other attractions include local parks and one of the longest strip shopping malls in the state.
